Standard route is snow-free if you go up and over K2. Stayed on the ridge proper from K2 to the summit to lessen rockfall danger, which entails much more class 4.

Aspens in the area are changing, some groves were at peak up high, but the classic valley shot from the TH should be peak in 7-10 days.

Thanks for the update, it is very helpful. I‘m planning on hiking to the lake Saturday, then attempting to summit first thing on Sunday. Are you still in the Aspen area? If so, what is the weather like? Is the peak staying relatively clear?
Thanks
Dan

Looks like another round of storms is coming in through Sunday, with Sunday being the worst day- 70% chance of precipitation on Capitol. I'll do a run late tomorrow that views Capitol, if it is not socked in. I'll post another update for ya after the run.

When we went last weekend, we stayed on the ridge until it countoured into the south face, then stayed low for the most part. Would you recommend staying on the ridge proper for my next ascent? I enjoy exposure and a challenging climb.

I prefer the ridge proper just because it avoids so much rockfall danger. Every time I have been on Capitol I have seen or heard rockfall; this route just minimizes the risk. Sure, there is more sustained class 4 and exposure, but worth the tradeoff in my opinion.

I'll have to try that next time.

EDIT: I'm adding this suggestion to my trip report.

Capitol looked as clear as it was a few days ago this evening, but a thunderstorm rolled in around 7pm that is supposed to last a while. It is relatively warm in town, but still would not be surprised to see a little snow high up.
