Frequently Asked Questions about Missouri Mountain

Do I need to climb over Mount Belford to reach Missouri Mountain?

No. Unlike Mount Oxford, which requires you to hike up and over Mount Belford first, Missouri Mountain is its own entirely separate hike. While it shares the exact same starting point at the Missouri Gulch Trailhead, the trail splits down in the basin; the path to Missouri branches off to the right to ascend the valley floor toward Elkhead Pass, allowing you to tackle the peak independently without ever stepping foot on Belford.

Are there specific rules for backpacking and camping in Missouri Gulch?

Yes, because the Missouri Gulch drainage is heavily utilized by hikers tackling three separate 14ers, strict wilderness protection rules apply. You are permitted to backpack and camp at established, flat dirt sites near the tree line, but you must pitch your tent at least 100 feet away from all lakes, streams, and developed trails. Additionally, campfires are heavily discouraged to protect the local subalpine ecosystem, and using a lightweight backpacking stove is highly recommended.

How long does it take to hike Missouri Mountain on its own?

The average round-trip time for the standard 9+ mile standard route is between 5 and 7 hours. Because the approach up through the gulch is long and the final ridge line leaves you exposed to the elements, you must budget your stamina carefully. To ensure you are safely off the high, narrow ridge crest before dangerous afternoon alpine lightning storms roll into the valley, you should plan to leave the trailhead by daybreak.

Can I climb Belford, Oxford, and Missouri all in one day?

Yes, high-endurance hikers sometimes combine all three Missouri Gulch 14ers into a massive single-day trip. Attempting this loop requires you to summit Belford, traverse the high saddle to bag Oxford, return back over Belford's shoulder, descend to Elkhead Pass, and then complete a separate, steep Class 2 push up Missouri Mountain. This forms a grueling 15-mile day with over 7,400 feet of total vertical climbing, requiring elite physical conditioning, flawless pacing, and an extremely early start to beat afternoon storms.
