Loveland Pass Conditions

Post by jsdratm »

I was wondering if anyone knew what conditions were like at Loveland Pass. I was thinking of trying Cupid and Grizzly on Thursday since the weather looks nice. Otherwise I am thinking about Bierstadt or Quandary.

According to cotrip.org, Loveland Pass has some icy and snow packed spots. Not sure what the route is like. I might be up there Thursday, if I do not ski.

Route info: I just got down from sniktau. I didn't carry snowshoes or any traction devices and I did not miss them. There were some drifts to walk through and I was glad to have gaiters. It was windy and there was a lot of snow blowing around - for that too I'm glad I had gaiters; I had a jacket pocket open and it was full of snow pretty quick. I didn't go to Cupid or griz, but from what I could see conditions were similar.
The drive up was fine, but there's meltwater on the road - it could get slick if it's real cold out. TH parking is plowed.
Let me know I you want more info.
Bob

EDIT: There are some pretty good cornices on the leeward side of the ridge. Be careful around them. Also, as you're going toward griz, the last bump before the final ascent up griz sometimes holds snow on the griz side of the bump. That may be a spot where an axe and traction would be needed. Or you might be able to workaround toward Loveland Pass road to avoid it.

Loveland Pass was closed Wed morning due to snow. The pass road can be snowpacked for about 24 after it reopens.

The high winds usuually keeps any significant snow building up on the south side slopes.
However there could be drifts on top of the ridges. Snow shoes could com ein handy after the 4 snowfalls we've had the past ten days.
