Pikes Peak Y Conditions
Does anybody know the snow conditions on the North side of Pikes Peak? Has anybody been up the Y or Railroad couloir? Hero's Traverse? Just wondering with as warm as its been. Thanks for the info.

I'm interested in this information as well. Any information on Barr trail or other approaches would be useful as well.

Re: Pikes Peak Y Conditions
I can't speak to the north face Couloirs, like the Y, but I trekked up and down the mountain via Barr Trail this past Sunday (19 Feb). I had every intention of going over and peering down the Y to assess the conditions, but the Summit House was open and I headed straight there to grab a warm coffee. Anyway, Barr Trail was bone dry for the first 3 1/2 miles. From 3 1/2 miles up and all the way to Barr Camp, there were sporadic but lengthy stretches of hard-packed snow and ice - traction devices recommended, especially for this section during the descent. From Barr Camp to treeline, the trail was snow-covered but nicely boot-packed. This section was mostly snow with little ice, but traction devices were still helpful. Above treeline, and all the way to the summit, the standard Barr Trail is snow-covered and NOT boot-packed. People are opting to ascend the prominent snow-filled gully to the summit at this time. There is a nice boot-packed trail leaving the Barr Trail (starting just in front of the A-Frame emergency shelter), that will deposit you into the gully, about 40 yards away. The gully is nicely snow-filled and consolidated and I neither carried nor used snowshoes. The ribbon of snow is continuous, which eliminates walking on the fragile alpine tundra. Here are a few pics.JamesD32 wrote:I'm interested in this information as well. Any information on Barr trail or other approaches would be useful as well.

Re: Pikes Peak Y Conditions
I did the Little Italy couloir on Tuesday. Snow conditions were awesome. I also heard the Flying W was in and some climbed it over the weekend. Flying W looked in on the approach to Little Italy. The road was still closed at Devils Playground.

Take a gander at the conditions tab, somebody just posted saying they think it's too thin.
"The love of wilderness is more than a hunger for what is always beyond reach; it is also an expression of loyalty to the earth, the earth which bore us and sustains us, the only home we shall ever know, the only paradise we ever need – if only we had the eyes to see." -Ed Abbey
"I get scared sometimes—lots of times—but it's not bad. You know? I feel close to myself. When I'm out there at night, I feel close to my own body, I can feel my blood moving, my skin and my fingernails, everything, it's like I'm full of electricity and I'm glowing in the dark—I'm on fire almost—I'm burning away into nothing—but it doesn't matter because I know exactly who I am." from The Things They Carried
