You're in for a raft of st*t with that idea. I suggested someone who was traveling out here in May do that for snowshoes/ice axe, if they couldn't find someone to rent from. This lead to several dozen posts cirticizing me, and a whole new thread from the person who started this one, interestingly enough.
I’m pretty sure that was sarcasm

If you want knock off mountaineering gear just fly to Kathmandu and wander around. Almost all of the stores are selling fakes. The only legitimate gear is in the tourist district of Thamel.

Supposedly much of it comes out of the same factories as the real stuff but I have no idea if I'd actually trust it on a mountain.
Very interesting, thanks!

I'm not even sure what to say to this. What you're describing is basically corporate theft. The copy-cat is STEALING from Arc'teryx. And there is *absolutely* no justification for that.
I can’t afford an $800 jacket, so I’ll gladly take the *stolen* jacket. Sorry not sorry.
So...the old “I’m poorer than you so stealing is OK” justification. We’ll see how that works out for you in the long run.

More pink text is needed imo. :p
(And yes, that was me joking)

Contacted Arcteryx and one of their reps will try to post here, but he confirmed that the link/ad the OP referred to is for fake/counterfeit Arcteryx product.

The Arcteryx factory outlet at Castle Rock has some serious good deals if you are looking to buy some original gear. I get all my Arcteryx gear from there.

I have gotten gear at the Arc’teryx outlet in Castle Rock a few times this year including a $500 Gore-Tex shell for $200 that’s worked out great. And they have bright colors instead of the dark blue and black and olive green that it seems every other outdoor company has now.

A few weeks ago my buddy reached out to me after seeing an add on FB (first red flag). Then I saw how the email address was spelled "Silmple" (second red flag). Then I went to their "Contact Us" page se image below(third red flag). Then after some googling and hearing about the fakes going around I sent an email to Arc'teryx (reportafake@arcteryx.com) and below is the response I got.

Bottom line is spelling errors should almost automatically set off red flags.

I absolutely do not endorse counterfeiters. It’s a bulls**t part of our society.

Bottom line is I’m still jealous my wife got a 900 fill arcteryx parka from the C.R. outlet stores for $300, down from $900 a few years ago

I’ll post about this jackets performance after a test. And I may take it into the outlet store to have an employee look it over someday.

Knock-off or copycat products happen all the time. If they're produced and marketed from outside the US they can slap whatever name on them they want (in countries that don't recognize or ignore US patent or copyright laws). Happens all the time.

As a consumer, my #1 priority is to get the best value for the money. So, if the copycat or "counterfeit" product meets my needs, great. I admit, I'm not concerned who produces the product, under what conditions, and the affect it may have on competitors. I'm only concerned about ME and MY wallet. If my Arkteryx jacket is made by orphan children in the slums of Mumbai working 12-hour days and it rivals the original in quality and only costs $100, I'll gladly shell out the money. But, that's me. Hey, I also eat 'roid laden chicken and Twinkies. Whatever.

I'm not so pious as to be disillusioned with global inequities. Uh oh...I think my discount computer keyboard is heating up. (Must have been made in Malaysia or Indonesia or something.) Let others fight this out. It ain't my battle.

I can almost guarantee that this counterfeit jacket won't rival the original in quality. Alpha SV jackets are one of the last Arc'teryx products Canada outside of their LEAF line and the quality control is pretty intense. Outside magazine came out with this article on the piece a while ago and I think its worth a read https://www.outsideonline.com/2286086/a ... -worth-750

The long and short of it is, the 3 layer Goretex material in itself is very expensive. Combine that with the R&D + manufacturing process, the lifetime warranty, etc and the price can easily justify itself. I'm a little biased as a self-proclaimed dead bird whore but I fully believe buying the real thing here is well worth it. You will most likely will run into durability and fit issues with a counterfeit or knock-off. It is simply too expensive to reproduce an identical Alpha SV and sell it for a $100 without taking a huge loss. The theory that it's an economical decision to buy the real thing and expect it to last for years definitely applies here. You can basically amortize the cost over time.
