(WINTER) HOLD ON! If you don't have much high-elevation, winter climbing experience, be careful in your planning and take a partner. All 14er routes are more difficult and more dangerous in winter.
Take Highway 12 From La Veta or Trinidad and drive to the north fork purgatory campground. Right before your reach the campground Road 437 will be on the left hand side the road its self is 4x4 and you will need a high clearance 4x4. The 4x4 road is roughly 3.5 miles and takes you all the way to treeline on the east ridge of Maxwell. Its a great scramble with medium exposure. Bring a helmet for safety, its roughly 1.5 miles of climbing the ridge with about .5 of that being the scramble. From the summit of Maxwell take the south ridge down to the saddle and gain the north ridge of Mariquita. 800' loss and gain over 3/4 of a mile, the north ridge is light class 2 and a short scramble to summit. Exit via east ridge of Maxwell cut across the saddle to east ridge below Maxwell. loose rock, scree is the name of the game.
