Summit WX question

Postby chuckakers » Sun May 31, 2009 3:47 pm

Planning to climb Mt. Handies the first week of September. Looking for info on typical weather conditions for that time frame.

Thanks - Chuck

It all depends on the strength of the monsoons which can sometimes occur into September. Generally speaking, the temps should be in the 50s or 60s in the day above treeline while the lows are generally around freezing. I have climbed Handies each of the past 5 years in early to mid-September and have run into sleet on the descent once in Grizzly Gulch from a thunderstorm. There are times when there is no chance of rain and you get crystal blue skies all day while at other times you still have the monsoons which can hit by 11 or 12 which necessitates getting an early start. You will need to check the weather. However, this time of the year is usually some of the best weather for hiking............SJ Ron
