3-day Routeburn Track, one of New Zealands most popular "Great Walks"
The Routeburn Track is a short (32km) 3-day tramp, that is often billed as the most scenic tramp in NZ, with many giving it higher praise than the famous Milford Track. Having just hiked the phenomenal Rees-Dart and Mueller Hut tracks, our expectations were sky high for the Routeburn, our first "Great Walk" designated tramp. The trail was extremely well maintained, and even had flush toilets installed occasionally between huts!
It was a surprise that we found the Routeburn to be our least favorite out of the 5 tramps we hiked in NZ. This might not have been the case had we hiked it in the opposite direction. By following the recommended direction (east to west), most of the scenic views were at our backs during day 2 and 3. I would strongly suggest hiking from the Divide to Glenorchy, if you're considering the hike. There's a bit more gain involved, but the views will be worth it.
That said, the tramp was still very scenic, and we managed to hike in great weather each day, while waiting out storms in the huts. There are so many amazing tramps in NZ...
Nice shots, hard to imagine this was the bottom of 5 tramps, but I hear ya on the west to east route. Can't really describe to you how envious I am of this trip to the Southern Hemisphere, to spend that much time in arguably the most beautiful place on the planet is something one should do before they die. Its uplifting to know this will happen again, at some point, keeps spirits high, something to look foward to, fun to plan for. Thanks 10 trillion times over for sharing this adventure, your pano photography, along with the rest, is something else.
Thanks for the comments lordhelmut. Indeed, my time in New Zealand only seems more magical the longer I reflect on the experience. I've still got two more NZ tramps to write up: The Milford, and the Hump Ridge. I'm excited to revisit these. Stay tuned...
I walked part of the Routeburn years ago and had a couple of the wettest days of my life - the Huts are a lifesafer.
Your pictures are outstanding - curious to know your camera details?
You are in some great wine country - hope you get to enjoy a glass.
