 Massive-East from Leadville Fish Hatchery

I ascended from Leadville Fish Hatchery on the Highline Trail to junction with Colorado Trail, then south to Mile 5 junction past North Willow Creek crossing. I took the Mount Massive summit trail west to Mile 6, then turned around in gaiter-deep unpacked powder in the tundra. With the fresh foot of powder today, 11-15-2010, the ascent is going to be challenging this week. If Halfmoon Campground is plowed by Lake County, it will be easier to park east of the Mount Massive south trailhead and hike from there this week. Beyond the day parking area at Halfmoon Campground, the Forest Service road is powder-covered and icy over rolling hills, which would be very hazardous for standard road vehicles without chains.
Round-trip hike was 9 hours. Summit would probably add 5 hours for a total of 14 hours. Entering from Half Moon Campground will be less.
