 Second Annual Winter Welcomer

Second Annual "Winter Welcomer"

Peak: Quandary Peak
Route: Standard, East Ridge
Date: October 30, 2010
Length: 7 miles RT
Vertical: 3500 feet
Ascent Party: Approximately fifty intrepid 14'eers

On Sunday, November 1, 2009, Steve Gladbach took six of us up Quandary Peak. Steve has been instrumental in "giving back" to the sport of mountaineering, often introducing beginners
and less experienced explorers to the joys of the alpine in all seasons. Steve's personal accomplishments stand beyond reproach, yet he has freely given of his formidable knowledge
and skill so that others might share in these high altitude treasures.

Since that day one year ago, each of us has gone on to enjoy many more summits, both winter and summer. It has been a very full year for each of the six of us, including Steve.
Steve's arguably crowning accomplishment was his end-of-winter solo trip into the San Juan, to tackle the Chicago Basin 14ers just before Spring Equinox, 2010.

Each of us owes a great debt to Steve. I wanted to honor him, and our maiden voyage of 2009, by welcoming, in turn, other climbers new to snow-season travel, thereby bringing full
circle the notion of giving back to the sport and this wonderful community of 14ers members. It is amazing to me that we had over fifty members on Quandary Peak this past
Saturday, many new to snow-season travel on Colorado's high peaks. We also had half of the original 2009 group in attendance this year. Congratulations to all who made this year's
ascent a safe and successful trip.

Julie starts up the shallow trench near treeline.

The "third wave" crests point 12,100.

The second wave ascends point 13,146.

Last year we had a little more snow but slightly warmer weather. Here's Cooper leading Steve and the gang up the false summit in 2009.

The "Second Annual" turns out quite a showing, in three waves.

I want to thank everyone who participated this year and made it such a great success and a fun time.
It was wonderful meeting everyone. I wish all a safe and successful winter season! You guys rock!

Quandary's summit doesn't provide much room. Nice feat with the summit pics. I had a good time last year. After mostly lurking on this 14ers site for a year or two, Quandary on November 1 was my first hike with members from the site. I was lucky to meet some great and experienced people that day. This time around, I hope others here enjoyed the same good luck that I did a year ago.

Looks like fun!

In the ”third wave” green jacket back row! I may have the distinction as the ”biggest dude” to summit.

Love it!

Wow ... that's a lot of people on one summit. Thanks, Jim, for expressing the well-deserved appreciation of Steve and what he brings to this site. Very nice indeedy. Happy trails!

The Best Hat..............

I don't know everyone or even recognize those I do know when they are all bundled up. But, the Best Hat award goes to the guy in the center of the ”Look left, look right” photos!

Real Men wear orange!

Best Hat

I want that hat! Just wash it before you give it to me. I'm dressing as Gladbach for Halloween next year!

Great pics as usual! Its nice to see all that snow up there. But who is that old man with the orange hat? Steve seemed unselfish and more concerned for the welfare of others as usual. He really is an amazing guy gotta give it to him. Looked like a fun day

El- Mine don't come out that nice either. Just get photoshop and you can make them look like anything you want! (hehe...I admit it)

Thanks for the complements though! Mountaineering, rock climbing, and photography seem to be an addictive little triangle...

BTW - next year for the Third Annual we're all going in orange hats, black sunglasses, goatees, and wool pocket shirts. And denali's in lieu of spikes or crampons.

Will the real man please stand up? : )

Had a Great Day!!
