I was in Chicago Basin over the same days, looking at those peaks and thinking ”THAT is the next trip to the San Juans.” Congrats on grabbing some great peaks.

Great photos and TR of an area I have yet to visit. How many miles from the trailhead did you pack in? I'll get out there one of these days!

Pack in

Hi, Terry:

The pack in is about 8.2 miles according to my GPS track, but it feels longer because you lose 1700 feet descending to the Animas River. The CO and Elk Creek trails are smooth sailing, but the Vestal basin trail is pretty steep with a full pack on. It indeed is a special place. If those were 14ers it would be a madhouse in there.

Nice pictures Kevin, but that should go without saying...
Your pictures of Wham make it look steeper than I remember. I'll need to revisit and climb it again...and again...and again....etc. (at least I hope I can get in there to climb it at least that many times more!)

So my girl just bought her own copy of Roach's 13ers book. So we're kicking back with the book last night, scheming future plans, and it just happens to open to the picture of Vestal. It grabs her attention just like your trip report did for me.

I believe that Lone Eagle is the most aesthetic mountain I have laid eyes on (and it's not even a mountain) but when I finally get up into Vestal basin I have a feeling that the Trinities may steal my heart.

Great report and photos. Thanks for posting.
