 My first Class 3

Total time: 4.55 hrs

Got up Sat around 4am and after packing up gear I was on my way to Bakersville to give this Class 3 a go.

By 6:30am when I pulled up to the TH parking lot was already full. So I had to park on the side of the road. I was sure I was going to have to share the trail up Kelso Ridge with tons of people but to my suprise I only found 5 people on my way to the summit. Everyone else was taking the starndard route up to Torrey's.

Turn off to the Ridge

Climbers ahead of me

This walls were so fun to climb. I tried to pick the hardest lines and had no problem with them.

Half way up

Finally found someone on the trail that could take some pics of me climbing. Thanks !!

This ended up being the picture i like the most of the whole day.

The knife edge, last climb before reaching the summit. Those white rocks were pretty fun to climb too.

At the Summit

Heading back down via the Standard Route. Showing the route up Kelso Ridge.

The breezes got plenty strong in the front range later in the weekend. How were they up there Saturday?

Not bad at all.

Im thinking around 25- 30 mph at the summit. Took my daughter hiking up El Dorado Springs Monday around noon and the winds were pretty strong there though. No wonder those fires in Boulder were so hard to control.

I'm a rookie and have hiked Mt Sherman and Grays. Never done a Class 3 yet and thinking about Kelso ridge route by myself but hard to tell how involved the Class 3 climbing is by photos. Did you climb with a rope or just using hands and feet? How vertical were the walls? Thanks for the input.

No problem.

Like the title says it was my 1st Class 3 and I didnt have any problems at all. I did not use rope, a helmet would have been a good idea, but i didnt even have problems with rock falling. There were 3 walls that I had to climb but all of them had great spots for footing and holding. If you are comfortable with some exposure you should be fine. The trail is pretty easy to file as well. GO FOR IT!

thanks for the invite zoriloco

Ended up getting thrown of my dryland cart when exercising my sled dogs the day before my planned ascent via Kelso Ridge. Left arm wasn't usable, so did standard route instead. Still a great day. Thanks for the invite, maybe next summer.

Knee pads?

Thanks for the trip report! We are considering this route as well. Quick question....What are those things on your knees? I have never seen them before. Is it for climbing so you have padding?

Knee braces

They are just knee braces, my knees give me problems after playing basket ball during my teen years.
