A great first 14er for families

My six year old took an interest in my climbing this summer and announce that he wanted to do a 14er with me. When I saw that the weather was going to be pretty clear and stable on Sunday Aug 22, I decided that I'd give it a go on Mt. Sherman, a mountain I'd never climbed but had heard was one of the easier 14ers. We began our hike from the 11,900 point of the Fourmile Creek road at 9am. This was later than I usually like to start but the route was short and it looked like storms were not going to be an issue. We steadily climbed the Southwest Ridge route with little trouble. The route finding was easy and the trail never got too steep or difficult. We reached the summit at 11:30am, had a quick bit to eat, and began our descent at about 11:50am. My son had a little trouble keeping his footing in the loose rock on certain parts of the downhill but otherwise did great on the way down. We got back to the car at 1:30pm. My son was beaming with pride at having completed his first 14er. While one always needs to exercise the usual caution when climbing any 14er, Mt. Sherman is an ideal choice for families and those looking to tackle their first 14er.

hooray for you and your 6 year old... that's awesome! I have a feeling that he will summit all the rest before before he can vote

Thanks for the info. My husband and I will be attempting to bag our first 14er this weekend. Looks like Sherman will be our best bet with regards to weather, degree of difficulty, etc.
Hopefully, the weather will hold out.

Should be a nice weekend for it. Just be prepared for the wind you might experience along the ridge. Good luck and have fun!
