 Emmons-Winthrop Route

Read the full trip report here.

After completing the Colorado fourteeners we decided to set our sites on some others. Mount Rainier seemed like a good choice of progression from what we'd done already. Before going I had a hard time believing that Rainier would live up to the hype. I wondered if it was talked about so much simply because it's the only 14er in Washington. Turns out it really is much more of a mountain than anything I'd done before. I'd done longer routes and ones with similar elevation gain. However the glaciers and the unrelenting steepness of the route were a huge factor. It's literally like climbing the Manitou Incline several times in a row with ever increasing elevation. Plus add in that you have to fully concentrate 100% of the time to be on your guard for crevasses. It was an amazing trip and definitely is taking it up several notches over Colorado 14ers.

Here's a few photos for those that don't feel like clicking throught to the full report:

Did the same route but for letting the wings of United do the driving. Your report captures the whole experience very well. Well done. Perhaps now it is for a trip south?

Congrats to all of you! Wonderful TR Josh. I can't believe how much less snow there is at Camp Shurman, compared with Jun '05.

I have my mind set on Rainer as one of the first peaks I'd like to climb after finishing the 14ers so the preparation and training info in your trip report were useful.

Good luck on your next post-14er endeavors
