 Elbert- South Trail

Elbert July 9, 2010

My first trip up Elbert was July 7, but we were ran off the mountain by a lightning storm. It pays to know when to leave, as some trail friends were caught nearing the summit, and were almost struck. Reading the tips for such and emergency here, I was able to call them with some "get low" advice until they could escape.

I tried the summit again on July 9th, with a trail family from Arizona, the adults were marathon runners and their yound daughters were atheletes! They really drug me up the mountain, and we made the summit in 5 hours and 15 minutes.

Wrod of caution to the users of the South Elbert Trail: beware of wrong turns...after leaving the trailhead, you'll pass a pond after about an hour...turn right, not straight, go to the wooden bridge. At the wooden bridge, cross it-dont turn left. After that, the trail is marked with two left turns to go up the mountain.

Enjoy the trip, take 3+ liters of water if your a big guy, take your camera, and for God's sake, when you see dark clouds coming around the mountains, go back.

Photos will be posted on F book, Clay Culver Atlanta.
