 Topless Glissading on Mt. Massive

Topless Glissading on Mount Massive
Climbing with Shawn (Vandalizer)
SW Slope

5:30 a.m. Left car
6:00 a.m. Depart Trailhead
10:40 a.m. Summit
2:30 p.m. Return to Trailhead
3:00 p.m. Return to car
9 ˝ hours total on the trail

We left Denver at 2:30 a.m. and we could not drive all the way to the North Halfmoon Creek trailhead because the Jetta is pretty low to the ground. We were able to drive to within a little less than a mile from the trailhead. Pretty uneventful hike until the trail was covered by snowbanks about half way up and we lost the route. We ended up just finding our way up to the saddle where the east slope trail merges with the Halfmoon trail close to the top. We must have lead about 20 other people astray as there was a crowd that followed our improvised route to the summit.

A look back down the summit ridge from the top. Looking at the false summit.

On the way down we did have the opportunity to do a little glissading. Shawn was topless by this time so I figured I'd name this trip report "Topless Glissading on Mt. Massive" and encourage some people to read my report.

Good day all in all. It was a long day with a lot of UP. It would have definitely been better if we had not have lost the trail on the way up. The snow on the trail will probably be gone within a week of this report to resolve any trail finding issues.

I will have to agree with FCSquid‘s comment, but a fun trip report nevertheless! Looks like a good time. Me and the kids are heading up to bag Sherman and Huron this weekend so I am really enjoying reading the reports and getting an idea of what the conditons are like. I‘ll give you a shout when we get a July or August trip planned. I think we are considering Blanca/Ellingwood or Humboldt right now, but things may change. Thanks for the report!
