 Massive - Southwest Slope

Great day for a hike up Massive. It was a just a touch windy and cool at the top but that didn't take anything away for what ended as an awesome day for a hike. I got to the North Halfmoon trailhead in time to get a 5:00am start which is plenty light enough for this time of year. Got a nice photo of the sun hitting the mountains to the south of Massive.
Sunrse to the south

The hike up the lower section is very manageable and no snowshoes are needed for any portion of this hike. There is some difficulty route finding as you attempt to gain the ridge to Massive and I actually ending up at the saddle to the east which is not where you want to be. You need to traverse the snowfield to the left as you are going up to stay on point.
Correct Line

Finding the correct route on the way down was easy but you run into this snowfield again and either have to make a long traverse or glissade down which was our choice. It made for a couple of really nice glissades

Here's couple of photos from the top. I always seem to meet very nice people, and sometimes their faithful companions on these hikes and today was no exception.

Back at the trailhead by 1:00pm and had to shed layers as I came down. All-in-all at great day on the mountain.

I was able to get a couple nice photos of Elbert and Massive on the way out.

Nice report. Am thinking of doing this on July 4th weekend, how close to the TH do you think I can safely take a Corolla?

2WD road is great...4WD road - probably not in a Corolla

Great day for Massive

Hugh, we‘re the couple that followed right behind you (+ Anna). Great report. Nicely put when explaining the snow traverse. We just posted our report which shows our day 2 hike to the lakes as well.

Maybe we‘ll see you on another hike!
