 Belford - Northwest Gully

Mt Belford - Northwest Gully Ski. May 22, 2010

Car camped at one of the numerous pullouts a mile or so from the Missouri Gulch (9670') trailhead. Started hiking with ski's at 6:20am under clear sky's but windy conditions. I was able to put my skies on just above treeline (11,500). Reached the base of the northwest gully at 11,900 at about 8:30am. Skinned up the gully all the way to within 30 feet of the summit. Arrived on summit at 10:45am. Weather continued to be clear but very very windy. Due to marginal snow cover on Oxford and high winds I opted not to bag both peaks. To the west and across the valley the north ridge of Missouri Mountain was loaded with lots of snow and what looked like many many choice ski lines were visible. The ski down the NW gully was a mixed bag of challenging cold winter wind pack at the top, delightfully smooth and firm corn in the middle sections and creamy soft corn towards the bottom. Skied to treeline and then hoofed it back to the car, arriving at about 2:15pm. Roundtrip, 4500', 8.5 miles, 8 hours.

Overall a very enjoyable ski!!!!
