Took a best shot at Mt. Adams from the East Side on Sunday. Mad Mike's TR planted the seed but we sure did not make the time that he did. Since we did not summit, let's call this a condition report.
Clear 2 WD to the trail head. The snow started at the trail head, 1st mile was 90% snow covered. Trail to Horn Lakes offered 50 yards of dirt and the rest was snow. Snow depth went to two feet quite fast but supported weight for first 2 miles, then onto shoes. No bare ground, no bare trail. Last flowing water was about 1/2 mile above the wilderness boundary. No open water higher up. Good ski "trough" over first three to three and one half miles of trail, then bushwhacked to tree line, unable to follow track/trail cut. Late day trip out on snowshoes, enough snowshoe post holes to create general disgust in group.
Found wet sugar snow lower down and on south faces, hard winter slabs otherwise. A.M. sugar was 3" on top of hard slab, wet through and through in p.m.
Saw one wet slush slide (sliding), contributed to turn around decision about 300 feet from summit and 100 vertical below, long day but no summit.
to add to your fine collection of trip reports. I really enjoy them, this being no exception. A few days ago I read your winter ‘04 Storm Peak report while looking for beta on Storm. You guys got creative with that climb! Having just been up there myself, I see how exhausting and intense the approach from Glacier Gorge is. Thanks for posting these stories
Sometimes I‘d rather forget about that Storm Peak climb . . . having made the assumption that ”there has to be traffic down the other branch of the Long‘s Peak Trail” and then learning the hard way that here wasn‘t . . . at 3 p.m. and knowing we had but a few hours of light to get back down. Thanks again for the thumbs up, makes the writing effort worthwhile.
