 Indian summer Grays hike

This was a spur-of-the-moment 14er.
I had incorrectly thought there would be a lot of snow, due to the half dozen showers so far this season.
I originally planned an early winter hike off of Loveland Pass. But as I got closer to divide the peaks were still showing fair amount of rock. That planted a seed of hope about exploring Grays. So I thought I would check out the recently regraded Bakerville forest road for 2010 Grays/Torrey hike, But the road acted lke a magnet crawing me to check out the trailhead. There was just patchy snow the final mile of road.
I was a little underprepared food & water-wise for full 14er hike only planning an hour or two at loveland, but had sufficient clothing. The weather forecast for Sunday was the middle day of stormless three day Indian summer.
The trail was patchy rock/ice in the first tundra half. Then packed snow generally less than foot deep the rocky second half, thanks to the Saturday hikers.
The strong Chinnock winds on the summit made me feel a bit cold, so I decided not to do Torreys this time. About half of the 20 some hikers I saw on the two mountains were doing Torreys. i could see Bierstadt clearly where just 8 days ago there was a SAR rescue of a hiker in winter weather. The weather can be so fickle.
I completed the hike from 9AM 2PM in uneventful last-season conditions. That was fast enough that low provisions werent an issue. But I'll be more careful about that in the future.
