Having succesfully summitted Redcloud and Sunshine the previous day Adam and I hung out in Ouray and woke up early again to finish off our extended weekend in the San Juans. This particular day offered blue bird skies, although the wind was still a nuisance, at 10-15 mph at times. The hike was rather uneventful, which was good news as just the week before a hiker had been extremely injured as a result of rockfall. Even though this was only a Class 2+ trail it became quite evident once we hit the base of the first gulley that a helmet was a good idea. Gullies like the ones (two total) climbed during this hike bring home the reality that mountains are eroding. It's been awhile since I've seen any Cottoneers so it was a bit of a shock to see a Florida Gator clad hiker with tennis shoes and no socks clambering up the first gulley (aka Lavender col). This was a great hike. Even though we were past the wildflower season it was still beautiful country. See attached link for some pics.
