Despite being a sub-14er, this was an incredible hike! The hike that I did was a total of 12 miles round trip, and it is described in the book, Timber, Talus, & Tundra. Starting at Cottonwood Pass, I hiked south on a trail for 2 or 3 miles, which followed the ridge line of the Continental Divide. After viewing a couple mountain goats, and later a herd of Elk, I came to the end of the well blazed trail. I then began following the ridge towards Mt. Kreutzer, which was a great hike! I had commanding views in all directions, incredible wildlife encounters with elk, mountain goats, ptarmigans, marmots, and pikas. And, not an encounter with a single soul the entire hike! Mt. Kreutzer had a small little jar for its log book, which I was happy to sign my name on. I also signed my name of a un-named peaks log earlier on my hike, I believe it was well over 13,000; in elevation, probably somewhere around 13,850'...I think.
This was one of the most rewarding hikes above treeline to date. It may not fulfill the thirst of some of the diehard 14er folks out there, because of the fact it is not a "14er", but it was a rewarding hike on a great ridge, lots of solitude, great vistas, and definite wildlife opportunities. If you plan on this trip, definitely start early, because you are above the treeline during the entire hike. There are ways down different drainages if you happen to get caught in a storm, but it may be a long way back to your car on Cottonwood Pass.
