After two unsuccessful attempts at La Plata's NW Ridge (one last October in some deep snow and one in May called because of physical issues) I chose to change my luck by going up the SW ridge this time. It is a more picturesque route and I would highly recommend it. However, I would not recommend it in the early spring as the upper basin would probably be a wet, sloppy mess in June.

Here is a look at the summit from the upper basin.

And a closer look at the summit

And here's a look at the route up to the ridge to the west of the summit.

Here is a peek at an old gold mining site about half way up to the west ridge.

And a look from the gold mine back out to the upper basin--note the tracks.

The hike up the west ridge was kinda tough with about 1500 feet of boulder hopping combined with 3-4 false summits make it a challenge.

Here is the flag shot with three fingers--representing the 3rd time is a charm on this pile of rocks.

Here is a peek at Ellingwood Ridge from the summit.

It was a great hike up and I really did like the SW Ridge route better than the NW ridge Route.
