My first 14er, actually my first real Colorado mountain hike, turned out to be a great day. Being from back east, I have no experience hiking mountains with snow still on them, but I figured I'd use my best judgment and turn back if it got too hairy. I started about three hours later than I wanted to, (great alarm), and hit the trail at 8am with my 5-1/2 year old lab. Image(Maddy) Image Image With the temperature at almost 70 and thunderstorms in the forecast I thought it might be futile to bring the skis, but packed them up anyway. Image The hike up was great, made it to the bowl in around three hours. Image Image I took a slightly different route than I've seen on most trip reports, but aside from a minor rockslide that almost buried my dog, I made it up to the ridge in good time and the weather seemed to be holding out.Image On the steep parts I probably should have had some crampons or an ice axe, but with the warm weather and hot sun, (good thing I got a late start) it only took a one or two heavy kicks to post a step into the hard pack. Image They added up fast, and at this point I regretted not going up the main couloir cause I had to make my own steps and my toes were hurting. The quick walk across the ridge was a little hairy where you have to go to the south face just below the summit because the snow was hard packed and in the shade, Image but thankfully there were some postholes established before. We reached the summit at around 1:15 took a half hour rest and I put my skis on!Image It was like skiing in a slushy on a snow cone. I'm not sure who enjoyed it more?Image The ski was short but any time spent skiing at the end of June is great! ImageCan't wait for next weekend!

That couloir is a fun ski, nice job getting it. P.s. I love seeing dogs springing down slopes in ski TR's, reminds me of how physically pathetic we humans are .
