Beautiful night of camping Friday 6/12 near the TH. Don‘t know if this peak has a name. It‘s not a 14er. It would be SW of Shavano I believe.
Started out at 5:30 and about an hour later, somewhere around 11,000 ft we were above the clouds, the sun having burned off any overcast. Comfortable temperature but from 12,000 on a strong, intermittent breeze kept it chilly.
We stuck to the ridge route but a fair number of people went up through the Angel (shown here) during the day. Snow wasn't a factor in gaining Shavano, no need for crampons or snowshoes but it would prove differently on Tabeguache.
Summited at 9 a.m. Early enough you'd think but already the sun was working its mischief on the snow. Here's a look at Antero and the road that zig-zags up it.
Left for Tabeguache (in the distance here, note all the snow going up to it.) around 9:30, crossed the saddle and started up the far slope but after a few minutes we decided that, as rapidly as the snow was softening, it might make for a nasty, post-holing nightmare on the way back to Shavano. Tough to turn around so close but definitely the right decision. Gordon, if you are out there, I believe you made the right decision in turning around before we did. You should have no regrets.
Regained Shavano at 10:51 and the weather was still holding so we took our time coming down and were back to the TH by 2 p.m. Great day, great hike, despite passing on the double. Probably less than two dozen people on the mountain that day.

I believe the peak in your first photo is Mt. Ouray, 13,971 feet. I hiked up it the day after you hiked Shavano. Beautiful mountain, and didn‘t see another soul the entire day !
Gordon here. You‘re right that It was tough to turn around at the saddle but def no regrets here. I can go back another day. nice trip report.
