 Mt. Democrat 1st 14er!

Climbed my first 14er with my buddy from Florida on the 20th of Sept. What a sense of accomplishment! Started off from Keystone with map in hand and made the 10 mile drive to Alma. The road to the trailhead from Alma was well marked (a street sign off the main street) and the road was plenty ok for the Audi to get thru.Started off a bit late (about 10ish) but got to the summit in about 2 hours. There were about 8 others climbing/hiking their way to the top of Democrat, so we weren't alone. The wind that day was suprisingly light and snow was light with only a few flurries as we got toward the top. The trail does start off pretty steep. It's not a gradual climb at all. Many times I had to stop to catch my breath and let my hear catch up but all in all just a great workout. The final push past the false summit proved to be the hardest part (for me anyway) but once we got to the top, about the same time as everybody else, we had a chance to take some pics, eat a snack and more importantly, have a bit of single malt! My buddy wanted to tackle the other peaks around us but I opted for going back down as the clouds around us were building up and I didn't want to get caught in snow or worse, lightning.
Met some great people on the way up/down and want to thank Brad and the guys for the cold beer at the bottom. You guys rock!!
Definitely looking forward to the next time. I'm thinking that we'll do Democrat again in the late spring and also link up to Cameron and Lincoln.
