Mt Sneffels is a fun and straight forward class 2. Needless to say we drove upward on the 4 wheel drive road as far as possible and managed to make it about .5 miles from the upper trailhead. Enter David, David is a spirited adventurer from the East Coast. A classy and interesting gentleman who embraces the "Freedom of the Hills." After meeting David we decided to climb together; my wife, David, and myself. Because of a torrential downpour until 11PM we opted to sleep in the cab of our vehicles. A sleepless night for all. At 5 AM it was either climb the mountain or continue sleeplessly for another hour. We climbed. This is a very well marked trail until the slog up the long chute to the col. Just pick a route, preferably up stable scree and talus, and head left towards the rock outcropping in the col. From here we began our ascent of the steep couloir. It was about 13700 feet we wished we had brought our ice axes and sought out a different route through the rock band. Not finding a route that seemed reasonably safe for a descent we painfully turned around...
The moral of the stroy: ice axes are small and invaluable tools in the climbers arsenal...never leave home without one!~
