Great Day with a lot of People

By Jeff Goodwin (AKA 4HClimber)

Torrey's and Gray's Peaks

July 11, 2008

Left Trail Head: 6:25 a.m.
Saddle between Torrey's and Gray's: 8:25 a.m.
Summit of Torrey's: 8:55 a.m.
Summit of Gray's 9:55 a.m.
Return to trailhead: 12:15 p.m.
Distance: 8.8 miles
Elevation gained: 3200

It was a great day to be on the mountain. However, there were a good number of people on the trail. Probably 75 people and at least 50 dogs were out there. The biggest hazard was dodging the used dog biscuits left on the trail. Soapbox time: People if you take a dog on the trail, pick up after them please.

Just on the trail a few minutes and here is the first view of Gary's (on the left) and Torrey's (on the right).

I decided to summit Torrey's first and made my way across to the saddle in just about two hours. The snow bank just below the saddle was about gone a very easy to get over.

And of course"the post-summit barley pop! (only one and after returning to the trailhead). Again"a great day on the mountain.

Even though this was only my third and fourth 14er, I am amazed at how unprepared many hikers are as they attempt a 14er. As I was approaching the trailhead at about 12 noon, a guy wearing tennis shoes and no water, no backpack, and no hat was headed to the top! And he also told me that he was caught in a thunderstorm on a mountain just a couple of days earlier. I believe I found a candidate for a Darwin award!

Just because Gray's and Torrey's are on the easy list does not mean they are easy. Just not as difficult as some of the others"but still potentially dangerous!

Everyone"Be careful out there!
