 Bierstadt and Evans Via Sawtooth

This is my first trip report, my first 14er (well, actually my first two 14ers), and 3 days ago was my first time to 14ers.com. Thanks for having me! And thanks for making this site!

Myself and 3 other fellas did the standard Bierstadt to Sawtooth to Evans route and I just wanted to give some other people a heads up - Sawtooth right now (6/21/08) is still snow-covered in some areas and it requires either doing some slightly tricky traversing across the snow (see pictures below) or going to the bottom of the valley and back up. Personally, I think going to the bottom of the valley would have been faster. Also, on the descent from Evans, the route guide isn‘t kidding when they say zigzagging through the willows is a challenge - It‘s a big pain in the butt and is also super-muddy (no way to avoid it). Wear some long paints, waterproof those hiking boots, and pack a pair of wool socks.

It‘s a fun trail and definitely worth it, but it took us a good 11 to 12 hours.

Hope this helped!
Adam

Any snow left to ski at all?

Hello Adam,

Did you see any snow at all on a the face you traveled up to the summit of Beirstadt that was skiable? We plan on hiking to Beirstadt over the Sawtooth & back vs. down through the willows & I had hoped to get a few turns in this month.

Thanks!

Umm....debatable. Personally I wouldn‘t lug up skis just for that little amount of snow, but there was some skiable stuff (again, this was last weekend) with a few tracks in them. I don‘t know what you consider skiable though...there looked like there were quite a few rough spots.

Hope that helped
Adam
