Route: Stewart Creek- East Slopes
Round Trip: 13.3 miles, 5 hours 55 min
Elevation Gain: 3700ft.
Hikers: KirkT, and ScottN

After hiking Wetterhorn the day before, we arrived at the trailhead from Lake City on Saturday around 4 pm. We set up camp and basically just prepared for the following morning. We decided not to hike up but rather start rather early the next day and try to finish early. We wanted to get an early start back to Denver. Word to the wise. This peak is way the freak out in the middle of no where. The mileage was about 50 miles from Lake City and it took us over 2 hours to get there! Over 35 miles of this trip was on dirt roads. It seriously is in the middle of no where! The roads just go and go and go.

We started at 5 am sharp. Scott set a very fast pace and he summited in 3 hours and 5 minutes. I was 15 minutes behind. We left the summit at 8:40 and arrived back at the trailhead at 10:55! 13.3 miles, 3700 ft. elevation gain, with a round trip of 5 hours 55 minutes. I could not believe our time. Just goes to show you what you can do when your really try. We visited with KeithK during our hike. He was thoroughly enjoying himself as well.

This is a beautiful hike. The trail is straightforward but pretty long on distance. The first 1 1/2 miles is through a beautiful meadow with natural ponds with many beaver dams. It then transitions through a wonderful forest to treeline. This is a very easy hike for beginners. The only drawback again is the distance. Could be a little long for a beginner. Beautiful area with much wildlife around. Enjoy.

Nice report. How was the camping around the TH? Was there good room? I am looking at doing this sometime in July with about 6 other people and just looking for some beta.
