 Evans - Guanella Pass

I have had several people ask about Guanella Pass Rd conditions and Bierstadt/Evans conditions from my climb last weekend. Sorry I didn't get this posted earlier but, it's been a busy week since returning to Nebrasaka. In a nutshell the road conditions are pretty good. Lots of pot holes but, that's to be expected. Some snow and ice spots but, nothing too severe. The over all climbing conditions for Evans was excellent! Weather was great and the climb was better! I did this climb solo and had the mountain to myself the entire day.

The day started off with a nice sunrise over Bierstadt from the TH.

Then I headed across down the trail through the willows towards the gully. I didn't find the willows to be much of a problem and pretty much crossed the creek at will to start up the gully.

I actually started traversing upward north of the gully to about the middle of it before diving in. The gully it'self was in pretty good condition as well. Some snow but, nothing major.

At the top of the gully

I followed Evans west rim south which was in great shape as well. Pretty windy in some of the saddles and in the gully but, otherwise very peaceful the rest of the way. The rest of the climb provided some great views. The only dissapointment of the day was no Mt. Goats!

Good view of the south face of Bierstadt which I climbed the day before from Guanella TH as well.

Stopped for a pose on the west summit ridge.

On the way back I walked up to the point of Sawtooth just because it was there plus I didn't feel like going down yet.

It was a nice day's hike. I started around 8:30 and was back to the TH by 5:30. I was able to take my time since the weather was perfect and just enjoy the day. Defintely worth the drive to Colorado.
