 Uncompahgre via Nellie Creek (continued)

This report is a continuation from the last. I'm not sure how some folks are getting more than 20 photos added to their report. Guess I'll figure that out later. So....After climbing Sneffels the plan was to cross over Cinnamon Pass from Ouray to Lake City to go tackle San Luis Peak. Let's just say this pass is rough. We came to a point in which I needed a winch to hook up to established winch points or air down all my tires in hopes of making it. We decided to backtrack and go over Engineer pass instead. All was well until we came across a very sloooooowwwww moving group of hummers going the same way. By the time we made it over the pass it was about 3:00pm. This didn't make doing San Luis very feasable with the incoming weather. Uncompahgre and Wetterhorn were now in great view. We passed the turnoff for Wetterhorn and then the turnoff for Uncompahgre came up. I looked at Chris...he must of knew what I was thinking...he said he'd wait at the truck. At 4:00pm WE were headed up the Nellie Creek trail. The weather was still holding good, but the potential was there for a turn for the worse. I was hoping to be on the summit for sunset, provided the weather cooperated.

Heading up Nellie Creek, Top of Uncompahgre showing.

By the time we reached treeline it was starting to drizzle a little, but the clouds were still broken up and not very developed yet.

View looking back down the Nellie Creek Drainage. The drizzle fizzled!!

Point 13,158.

Top of "notch."

Above the notch.

From here we left the trail to avoid all the loose scree and climbed up through the ledges on the right side of the pillar. This added a little class 3 to the trek.

Above the pillar looking back down.

Wetterhorn and Matterhorn off to the west.

W-NW from summit. I summited at 6:00pm. The view from the summit was quite awesome. Two grrrreat view in one day....gotta love it!!

Me at the summit of Uncompahgre.

View from summit to north.

Chris arrived at the summit at about 6:30pm.

View from summit to SW.

Wetterhorn to the west.

Wetterhorn a little closer up.

Amazing enough the incoming front was splitting as it approached Uncompahgre. If I didn't know better I say the "main man" was helping us out a little. We stayed on the summit until about 7:00pm and enjoyed the view and sunset, then we took our time heading down. Deep inside I wanted to stay a little longer, but I knew the weather wasn't going to hold forever. Once we got back down below the saddle at about 8:15 it started to rain. We arrived back out the truck at 9:00pm. Just as we got back at the truck the rain really started to cut loose. What a day...Sneffels and Uncompahgre. One of the more enjoyable days I've had in the mountains!!!! Chris not only got his 1st but also a second Colorado 14er today. Thanks Chris for coming along!!

Thanks...It's hard though to get a picture that captures the true beauty and spendor of it all, but I have fun trying. It won't be long til things start turning white. Hopefully not for a couple more weekends.
