 West Slopes from Iowa Gulch-OUCH

Okay, so this is my first report. Let me start by saying "I LOVE 14ers!" This is trip number 5 and I can't wait for the other 48!! So, we started out late Sunday morning as we had all been up late misbehaving. (Myself, my Husband, and our close friend who shall remain nameless! LOL) Our climbing partner printed out the directions to Mt. Sherman from Thornton. (he failed to notice they printed funny and cut off some important directions!) We realized we had faulty directions as we were getting into Leadville. We figured "how hard can it be to find a mountain?" HA We took my brand new 36 hour old SUV and found an old mining road that ran a few dozen yards from the actual road leading to the trail head of Iowa gulch. (which we didn't see until after!)

After several scratches, broken skid plate and messed up bumper we parked and hiked in. We saw the trail head and parking area as we neared the base of Sherman. LOL The climb was great, lots of cairns, no way you could lose your path. We started out from the truck at 8:20 AM and made it back by 11:20 AM. Ran into some great folks on the summit. Alabama (you know who you are!) Super cool dude. My husbands first summit we took lots of pics and hung out a bit.

Conditions were brisk but sunny...clouds didn't start to appear on the horizon until we were already descending. Beautiful view! Had some great scree skiing on the way down! Had my first wipe out...laughed through the pain and had a blast. Cheers to all and Happy Climbing! ME

Why must you post ridiculous pictures of me? Man I was tired. Oh well. Good times. Glad to be there when you and Zach got your first! Hope the car is doing well!

Enjoyable summit members...

Enjoyed spending quality summit time with all of you! Maybe if ShadyHater69 wasn't so fast he wouldn't be so wore out... Glad you got your brand new SUV out, hopefully with no new damage. Will be looking for you again on my next Colorado 14er trip next year. Managed to get in numbers 11 - 16 this past trip. Thanks for the mention in the TR..your are too kind I, too, wiped out...bent one of my hiking poles in the process.
