Bross from Kite lake: For beginners?

After having done Mt. Lincoln last week from the Quartzville trailhead, I decided to give Mt. Democrat and Mt. Bross a try this weekend.

First let me say that I have been in Denver two years and enjoy hiking 14ers but have a difficult time with exposure. I have reached 15 summits but all of them have been Class 1 and 2 climbs. For those of you that have no problem with exposure, this report is not for you.

I reached the Kite Lake trailhead at 6:45am and had no trouble making it up Mt. Democrat. I summited at 8:15am. There were perhaps 50 other people on the trail and every person that I saw made it up with no problem.

I descended down to the saddle at 13,400 feet to start my climb to Cameron and onto Bross. The descent down was fine, no worries. Then I noticed the path to Cameron/Lincoln/Bross. I must say that I was somewhat surprised by the narrow trail to Cameron. It is not mentioned in either Roach‘s book or Dawson‘s.

The wind was blowing at 20 mph and I noticed that I certainly was taking my time in order to get across the ridge to Cameron. Others seemed to have no troubles, but if you are a little hesitant travelling across ridges, you may want to consider doing both Lincoln and Bross from the East(Quartzville for Lincoln and Mineral Park for Bross).

The trail from Cameron to Bross is very wide and definitely a class walk/jog. My challenge was the descent from Bross. There is a very narrow trail down a very steep slope that goes for at least 1/2 mile. I noticed several people moving at a much quicker pace than myself. I must say I was quite nervous for a good 45 minutes.

So many of the reports that I see are from people with more courage than myself and wanted to give a heads up to those who are looking for an easy hike. Of my 15, the descent from Bross, was by far, my least enjoyable.

I agree with you and I think that this trail is under hyped, so to speak. It can really be more than you bargained for and the descent down bross...well, it sucks.
