Mt. Shavano Trip Report 08/06/2007

Dynamic Duo (Shavano & Tabeguache)
After retreating from attempting to hike up Uncompahgre Peak on August 4th, I decided to hike up Shavano and Tabeguache starting from the standard route at Blank Cabin. My coworker/friend joined ne, and we left Elk Creek (Curecanti NRA/Blue Mesa) at 4:00am and we were hiking by 6:00am. The trail was more gradual than I expected, becuase reading about the elevation gain of 4,400‘ in 4 miles had me wondering just how steep the trail really was. But, it didn‘t seem too steep to me. We got to the saddle, but the angelic snowfield was all melted away. I met a woman, named Monica I believe, and she was really cool. She had done 39 other fourteeners and was going for Tabeguache, because she had to turn around during previous attempts. I talked to her for a bit waiting for Ryan to get to the saddle, then we hiked up to the summit and got there at about 9:00am. It was a fairly cloudy day, but mostly overcast. We hung out for a bit, and then went over to Tabeguache. We had an awesome wildlife sighting of a mountain goat on Tabeguache, the goat was really cool and seeing him made my day. They are so awesome! I got to Tabeguache shortly after 10:00am and hungout with Monica and a man who I can‘t recall his name, but he said that he was on his 4th round of doing all the fourteeners. Major props go out to that man, he rocks! Monica gave me some props too, for being a pretty strong hiker for being a flat-lander (I am from Michigan). These two peaks were my 17th & 18th fourteener respectively, and I have nine for the summer so far. I am a little sad, because my volunteer position for the National Park Service is over and I have to head back to Michigan to prepare for the school year. I am hoping to summit a couple more peaks on my way home if I can fit them into my schedule. What and awesome summer!!!!! I hiked up several fourteeners and backpacked portions of the CDT too.
