Mt Evans - NE Face (Summit Lake Trailhead)

Trailhead: Summit Lake is obvious just past the 9 mile marker. Latrines available. Your Golden Access Passport, national park pass, etc., covers the entry fee to Mt Evans Road.

Trail: I walked the shoulder of the road to the rock cairn (at a culvert) that clearly marked the turn up the face. The trail is clear of snow but the snow melt drains down the trail in a couple of spots that made it a little muddy low on the face. Cairns mark the trail where it is ambiguous. It is steep but not especially challenging.

Ascent: 1:10 from trailhead to summit, climbing at a steady pace.
Descent: 45 minutes.

Comments: Elite climbers, i.e., Roach, call this an outing rather than a climb. That's fine by me because I had the trail to myself on a prime summer weekend hiking day with perfect weather. The drive up to the trailhead is spectacular and Summit Lake is beautiful in its own right.

Wildlife: There were two herds of mountain goats with kids at the top. They posed for pictures and were not at all intimidated by people. Marmots, pikas.
