My wife and I, Jim (crazydiamond_80), Beth (her usename escapes me), and a few other friends set out to do the Angel of Shavano route to Mt Shavano with the hopes of going over to Tab as well.
We left Colorado Springs at 5pm and arrived at the trailhead around 8pm. With so many people to help, the girls set up the tents, while the rest of us cooked dinner (Chicken Fajitas were awesome), and a selection of beer to enjoy. With the campfire roaring it was a hard decision but we decided to hit the sack to get some sleep for the hike ahead.
We left the trailhead at about 6am.
It took about 90 minutes to reach the point on the trailhead where you need to head south west as the trail banks hard north and up some switchbacks. I was going to take a picture for others but I forgot. There was no snow up to this point, the river crossings were simple and fun, and we were all in good spirits.
We left the trail and headed up the confluence to the base of the Angel and along the way we somehow inherited a dog? We all stopped at the base of the Angel to put on some crampons, trade out poles for an ice axe, and grab a bit of grub.
There is still plenty of good snow for a fun snow hike up the body of the angel however you could begin to see where people glissading down had bumped over some small rocks beneath the snow. Be careful as you glissade or your tailbone might NOT thank you!

There is still snow on the Angels left arm (face right) so we decided to take this route as far up as we could. The snow went all the way to the saddle between the 13K foot point due east of Shav's summit. From there we headed up the direct east face of Shavano which still has some snow on it.

and once on the summit we were greeted with near no wind, 50 degrees and slowly increasingly cloudy skies.
A look back down the south ridge to the summit of Shavano show's that this was a busy weekend on the mountain.
There is practically no snow on the route the entire way up the trail, so for those of you who don't want to deal with much snow, Shavano via the trail is definitely a go!

And then the fun begins. We glissaded down the east face of Shavano to the saddle, taking care to avoid rocks.
and then glissaded back down the angel. We went from the very top of the Angels right arm, all the way to the bottom!
and then headed home. It took about 2 hours to get down and back to the car. On the way out, we snapped this photo of the Angel from 252. Note that there is still snow there and this should be a fun easy snow route for a few more weeks but the snow's meltin' fast!
