I met Guitmo223 at the trailhead a little after 8:00am. He brought three other you men with him, one of whom was his son, just back in town. After putting on our boots, gaiters, etc. we hit the trail. There were quite a few skiers ascending with their various dogs as well. It was nice and snow packed through the trees for me, but the guys were post holing occasionally making it slower going. After a while I pulled ahead and continued on up basically solo. Guitmo223 kept a nice slow and steady pace even after the others fellows with him turned around. I eventually caught up with three really great guys that were climbing up and skiing down. We all loosely hung together the rest of the way up. One word of caution - although it was a beautiful bluebird day, it was windy. Nasty windy. Guitmo estimated that the winds were around 40mph with gusts up to 60mph, and I agree with that. Additionally, the wind chill was around 0 from 13,500 and higher. It was so cold at the summit, that I basically "touched base" and then headed down. I started to get a bit of frostnip on my nose, and the skiers I was near lent me their balaclava until I got lower in elevation. A note to skiers - the snow was rotten! It really made everyone work hard. It would have been easier to climb down instead. Near the bottom the snow had warmed up enough to make a posthole nightmare for anyone not wearing snowshoes. I ran into Guitmo223 on his way up after I summitted and was heading back down. He summitted as well and returned to the car a bit after I did. All in all, a good day for my first winter ascent!
