Windy On Shavano |
---|
A friend and I headed up to Mount Shavano this past week for a climb of the standard route from Blank Gulch. The drive in was uneventful as the road was almost entirely dry to the trailhead. The most dissapointing thing about it was the fact that the Restroom was locked without another car in site. Needless to say i was a little unhappy. But one couldnt stay unhappy about the lack of amenities for too long as it was an absolutely gorgeous day. (yes i'm kidding...i have not problem leaning against a tree or rock) As we hiked we started to encounter shallow snow along the way, but never a need for snowshoes. The trail was well packed and as we meandered on up the snow got slightly deeper, but never more than 6-8 inches. As we broke treeline we also seemed to break snowline. The only part of the day that was a challenge was when the trail crossed the angel of shavano, which was at this point very hard and icy. This doesnt pose much of a problem if your boots are stiff enough or if you have crampons, but as we weren't carrying crampons, my climbing partner didnt have quite as easy a time on the slick snow as my plastic mountaineering boots did. (Although i am convinced that her feet must have hurt much less than mine by the time we got back to the car). Anyway about the time we cleared treeline the wind hit us in the face and was off and on and gusting until the summit. Above the right arm of the angel it was mostly dry as was the summit block with a few patches of snow. We made the climb in somewhere around 4 hrs at a leisurely pace and the decent in somewhere around 1.5-2 hrs. Some summit shots Elin on top Myself on top |
