 Harvard: turned back

We didn't make it! We were turned back by high country weather.
Grandson Ted, trishapajean, and I attempted to join the fall gathering to climb Mt. Harvard. But we got such a late start that it was full dark long before we reached the group campsite. Although we enjoyed hiking under the clear, starry sky on Friday evening, we couldn't find anyone else's tents. (Probably most people with good sense were already getting to sleep by the time we found Scott's marker, well after 10 pm.)
We hiked up to just about timberline, where, hungry and cold, we finally and hastily made camp. We saw the clouds begin to roll in just as we were finally tucking in, and decided to re-evaluate things in the morning.
One quick look out the tent door about 6 am made it pretty clear that this was not the day we wanted to attempt Harvard. We finally met the rest of the party coming up just after we started down. It was great to meet everyone, finally, but while we admired their pluck for continuing up, we stuck with our decision to bail. Another day.
I've climbed Harvard before, so I didn't feel too bad for myself, but it would have been nice if trishapajean and Ted could have added one more peak to their climbing resumes this year. So, sooner or later, we'll be back. Thanks to everyone who helped put the gathering together; we're looking forward to another one, with better conditions, next year.
