 Handies - West slope

My friends and I camped at Mill Creek campground outside of Lake City and only about 1.5 mi from the turnoff for Cinnamon Pass Rd. Mill Creek is a great site with potable water from two hand-pumps and immaculate potties.

The road to American Basin isn‘t all that bad. Very bouncy but passable to small pickup trucks, Subaru Outbacks and of course all manner of anything larger. Didn‘t have much requirement for 4WD although that helps with steering around the rocks and holes. Nothing outrageously steep. I would note that a bit of the shelf road is washing out, and there are warning cones at the edge.

You pass the Silver Creek/Grizzly Gulch THs on the way to American Basin, and I think next time out I‘d camp there for a guaranteed early start on Redcloud Sunshine or Handies. There‘s creek water and decent outhouse at SC/GG.

The trail up Handies is easily followed and passes by a pretty little hidden lake about midway. There‘s a stretch of broken rock after the lake that makes you mind your footing. The summit view is spectacular, 360 degrees of other peaks. No sign-in tube at the top.
