 14ers Jihad Week - Sneffels

Date: Sunday, August 6, 2006
Team: TalusMonkey
TH: Yankee Boy Basin

Day 2 of 14ers Jihad Week was a rest day - Sneffels is easy enough to count as a rest day. CODave had already done Sneffels last fall and chose not to repeat it with me. So we woke up at about 0500 in Ouray and CODave dropped me on the jeep road just past the rest rooms on the Yankee Boy Basin road at exactly 0600.

The jeep road is easy to follow to its terminus at 12,350. From there it is a very gentle trail to the base of the gully at about 12,700 or so. I was first on trail and it was apparent that I would be on the summit alone. I quickly gained the saddle and charged up to the summit feeling strong. Not much to say about this route - Bill's description on this site is right on. I made the summit at 0740.

On the summit (photo looking west):

Colorado's 14ers are Colorado's highest mountains, right? Shouldn't your beer be big like your mountains? Does your microbrew come in a family size?

After a few minutes on the summit for photos and beverage, I began my descent. I ran into the next hikers at about 13,200, then another couple at about 12,800. Somewhere about 13,000 I took out the bottle and resumed my beverage enjoyment... I passed a few more groups of hikers and arrived back at the truck at 0858.

Arriving back at the truck: "I am Porthos! And I defy the king!"

We returned to our hotel in Ouray at 0955 - with a whole day to hang out before driving around to Navajo Basin on Monday to hike in for the Wilson Group.
