Began hike at 4:40am. Two other hikers who left 10 minutes before me missed the Mt. Shavano TH sign with their headlamp and remained on the Colorado trail for 0.5 mile before returning. There were a few spots by the stream where patience was needed to find the trail.
At the saddle prior to ascending Mt. Shavano, there was a good water source - so maybe bring a filter to collect fresh water for the trip down - beats carrying too much up.
The ascent up for me was 3.75 hrs., and the trip over to Tabegauche peak was slightly less than an hour each way. There are multiple trails going up Tabe Peak, but all seem fairly equivalent. As the clouds started building over Tabe Peak, it was time to descend. The descent was roughly 2.5 hrs.
The previous day in the afternoon I had observed nice pictures of sheep and goat herds within 25 feet of the trail that returning hikers had taken - but they were not around at all today.
The total trip was about 9 hours, allowing for a 30 minute break on Shavano‘s summit, and 15 minutes on Tabe, which I had to myself! There were less than 10 people that did the complete hike to both peaks today.
