 Longs Peak - Keyhole Route

This was the trip to tackle Longs Peak as I was feeling strong and had completed two 9 mile warmup hikes (between 10-12,000) and 2 other summits (Sherman and Quandary). On the day before summiting I took an exploratory hike to Chasm Lake - which was an excellent idea as I familiarized myself well with a trail I would not be seeing well at 2:00 - 4:00am.

I started promptly at 2:00am, and this was primarily a solo effort although close to the Boulder Field I met up with a group from Michiigan I had met at the lake yesterday, and we stayed together to the summit and most of the descent.

The weather conditions were perfect the whole ascent - no wind, no precipitation, nice temps.

I don't have much to add regarding the trail description as the details on this website/forum are excellent.

Although I had much of the first several hours (to the Chasm Lake junction) to myself, things backed up at the Boulder Field, and we had a small crowd at the Keyhole.

Sunrise looking east was inspiring, and we eagerly proceeded. Maybe 20+ people were doing the Homestretch at the same time (but no rocks rolled!).

The ascent took roughly 5:45, and I was able to spend a good hour on the summit. The descent concerned me more (Homestretch and Trough) as care definitely needed to be taken for each handhold and foothold)

- we are on the lower left in this photo.

A great peak - and I was fortunate to catch it mid-week with ideal weather the whole hike.
