Grays and Torreys as First 14ers

Our group of three arrived at the parking area (first car) at 5:45am and got on the trail immediately, thanks to the consistent emphasis on getting an early start (more on that later). We found the entire trail to be well marked and maintained and arrived at the summit around 9:00am. Although this seemed a little longer than other reports, we (Floridians) were just happy to have made the ascent.

Seeing Torreys peak so close, we didn't know how anyone could make Grays without continuing on, so off we went. This was a little more taxing than we thought, but we hit the summit at 11:00am sharp. At that moment, we heard the first thunder of the day (off in the distance) and decided that it was time to begin the descent. The descent took longer than we expected, but we were still down prior to any rainfall.

We saw many hikers beginning their ascent while we were almost down the mountain. The storm clouds were clearly closing in, so there must be many under-informed hikers. For additional emphasis, the storm clouds move in fast and you will not out-pace them. Start early and watch the sky.

All in all, it was a great experience and we'll certainly be back for more. Check out the four images depicting the weather change from a beautiful day to a storm filled sky in a period of about an hour or two. Image Image Image Image
