arrived at the Winfield TH in the afternoon of the 1rst of July,it was rainig pretty heavy.i had reserved a 4wd pickup at the denver airport but when I arrived they didn‘t have one so they substituted a Hummer . Should have and could have driven all the way up the 4wd trail but set up camp in a great spot about a mile from the actual TH. Due to the rain we overslept and didn‘t hit the tral till 7 about an hour later than what we had intended. Trail winds through the trees for a while. When you exit the treeline there is a great view of the 3 apostles and Ice mountain. the trail meanders through the basin and up some talus to the summit. I had 2 kids with me who had never climbed before. I was worried about them with what turned out to be with no reason,Once they smelled the summit they were off and gone, and were waiting for me when I summited. Took photos, ate and enjoyed the view.Looked like weather was moving in so we left . I had a real problem descending, my knees and hips were killing me. this was the first time i had that problem. Told the kids to get down in a hurry,I wanted them below the tree line if lightning occured. On the way down met lots of people actually on the way up which I couldn‘t believe. Got down, broke camp and drove to Leadville, ate at Rosies Brewmaster pub,if you go there order the fish and chips, some of the best I ever had. That along with their beer capped of a great trip. The trail is the best I ever experianced.
