 Handies - American Basin

Handies was our first 14er. Some notes for similar novices.

We parked at what we thought was the American Basin Trailhead, but was actually .6 miles from the normal start - we just took the first parking spot we saw. No problems for 4WD Bronco to the parking lot, had we taken our Subaru we'd have probably been better off stopping at Grizzly Gulch.
Uneventful trip up - there is a fork in the trail which leads to a lake, but we didn't discover the lake until we were above it.
The rock crossing was certainly not scrambling, but suggestion is to take it slow.
Wind on top was not bad that day, but the final ascent, in addition to being very steep, was very windy.
The loose dirt coming down was a little tedious and unexpected, no falls but we were glad we weren't in a hurry.

Newbie thoughts
#1 and the only one that is really important - It is so majestic to be up there that photos cannot ever express it. It is a religious experience regardless of what/if any religion you ascribe to.
Ascent was uneventful, but coming up from 500 feet above sea level was difficult. Partner ascended after 3 weeks at 8000 feet, I was way behind him after spending only 3 days at 8000 feet. Be patient with yourselves.
I drank water and had some snacks on the way up, but felt much like one does at the back end of a marathon or triathlon. When/if I do it again I would probably mix in a bottle of "Gatorade" type drink as that has worked for me in those events.
Great peak if you're afraid of heights, not much exposure.
Really steep at the end - perhaps they are all like that - but it really made it feel "earned" in taking that slope at 14000 feet.

Beautiful hike/climb, beautiful day, a friend of 50 years and I did it together. 57 more to go - if we do 1/year we'll only be 120 when we finish!

Peace to al.

Please read other Trip Reports, you will see where you have failed to provide good information, personal thoughts, something many others can use.
More photos. More personal experiences.
Selfies with summit signs aren't needed here, save those for Fbook.

condescending Much?

@JQDivide ah yes the miserable elitism of 14ers.com rears its head again. When did making trip reports become an exam? I thought it was fine. Asinine nitpicking will continue to discourage people from posting here. Try some constructive criticism next time. Thanks for the report!! Love Handies.

LukeMazza20,
JQ is referring to the guidelines we display when a user begins to add a trip report. We have these because we get thousands of trip reports and setting some basic guidelines helps keep them useful and easier to search. Here is the ”Add a report...” popup that's displayed:

When Bill dislikes a TR, one might want to think their choices.
He doesn't want, blurbs and selfies.
There are multiple clicks on the guideline before posting.

taking it down
8/9/2024 11:33am
Happy to take it down tomorrow if it is not useful. Having read several reports, some stuff as noted surprised me a bit. Could have put in information about the cancer surgery 2.5 months ago or the hospitalization 3 weeks ago, but didn't think that was appropriate. This is probably the most surprising moderation I've seen amongst a generally supportive group.

Sorry for posting.

Nice summit

Nice job on the summit, and Id have found the information provided helpful if I were someone looking to start out and hike Handies. That peak was one of my favorites, mainly due to the summit view. Sorry about the negative reactions. I think sometimes veterans here just cant relate to the new hiker, the exhilaration from reaching that first summit, and wanting to share that.

I agree with the guy who suggests going over to the Facebook group. I generally find that the culture over there is much more friendly and welcoming to newcomers and more appreciative of special accomplishments by regular people. Not sure why this forum community cant be more like that, but please dont let anything that happens here detract from your summit of Handies.

taking it down at 5

Thank you all for all the information provided on the site. I understand the need to moderate duplication.
On the Newbie vs. Veteran issue, in martial arts, I'm a 6th degree blackbelt instructor of instructors. I also am NOT the best source of information for our newbie kids and adults. My newer instructors are more able to relate to the new martial artists than I am.

Anecdote over, will take this down, and once again, thanks for doing all of this work. The ascent was a highlight and possible in part due to this site. Life is good!
