3 July 2005 San Luis Peak

The La Garita Wilderness was pretty busy over the holiday weekend, but it was great. We still didnt run into that many people. Didnt see any wildlife, so that was kinda a bummer and a relief. We did hear some coyotes howling before we went to bed on 2 July. Myself and six others made a backpacking trip out of this (my first backpacking trip so it was quite the trip!). We were going to backpack in a few miles, but ended up backpacking in to treeline, which made the summit day a quick ascent. We left the trailhead at 12:30pm on 2 July, and made it to camp around 3:30pm. One of the stream crossings was pretty tricky, especially with a huge pack on! At our camp site, we heard nothing but the wind and planes (we must have been under a flight path). It was very peaceful and REMOTE regardless. We left our camp site at 8:50am on 3 July, and arrived to the summit at 10:50am. There were about 3 people and 2 dogs (many climbing that day!) on the summit at that time. We were amazed by a couple running with their dog (i:8280b48c27)up (/i:8280b48c27)and down the trail--talk about a workout! We were back at the car at 3:45pm, just in time to drive the dirt roads before the storm hit. All in all, a great 14er, especially for the first one for the season.
