 Mt. Yale Report

Heading out from the Denny Creek Trailhead on Saturday, 9/17, this turned out to be one of my favorite 14ers thus far. The weather was perfect with absolute sunshine and no clouds in the sky after we started at 8am. There were just a few cars in the parking lot, and there were only a couple other names in the register.

The first 1.75 miles were beautiful along the creek and among the aspens that are beginning to turn. About a half a mile after the trail splits at the sign, the first section of steep switchbacks begin up to about 12000. Once we were above the trees, we could feel the wind picking up. The wind was persistent for the rest of the route, which was about 2000 up to the summit.

The last pitch at 13000 was fairly steep with a couple of trails to choose from, but easy to follow. With the wind at our backs on the ascent, we did not notice its power until we reach the ridge before the final summit ascent. We stayed on the leeward side to approach the false summit and the last 100 to the summit, where we saw about 4 other hikers. The view of the Sawatch Range, Pikes Peak, and the Elks was crystal clear with blue skies all around - It took about 2 hours and 45 minutes to reach the summit.

On the way down, the wind was more powerful as we descended the route to the west. We encountered a lot more hikers as the temps warmed up. At about 1pm, we reached the parking lot after a 5 hour round trip. Fantastic day, and a new favorite climb -

Also - We probably missed it, but is there a register at the summit? We could not find it -
