We left to climb Shavano on May 21st 05 at 5:30am via the Blank Gulch trailhead. The temps were warm even at that hour. We decided to leave our snowshoes in the car, but did bring our crampons. Since I was battling a bad cold, we took our time ascending thru the forest. Soon enough we lost the trial, but just continued west until we reached the bottom of the Angel. Our path to the summit could be seen pretty clearly - straight up to the head of the Angel, then a quick scramble to the summit. We reached the summit and wanted to climb over to Tabagueche. Since the winds were gusting out of control and the snow conditions were poor, we chose to go pass on Tab and instead head down the mountain for a glissading ride. Wow - that was fun!! Talk about getting upto speed. I brought an inner-tube in my backback, blew it up, and went for a ride. All was going well until I had a blow-out. The tube took a rock and blew. Better the tube than my butt!! We reached the rock fields and followed our trail into the forest. Somehow or another we got to talking and missed a few turns, then starting following the wrong drainage. Soon enough, we were 1 mile north of the trialhead. How anyone could get this far off trail is beyond me. I, of course, blamed it on my climbing buddy. Got back to the car safely around 2:30pm - safely.
